Trucking remains one of the deadliest occupations, according to the latest federal data, with more than one of every seven on-the-job deaths occurring in heavy-duty trucking. Nearly 700 truck drivers and their passengers are killed each year. This high risk career deserves more support from all of us. The lives we all live today rely highly on such logistic careers and affect us, whether we think about it or not, every single day.
For new drivers we saw problems with not being able to afford health insurance right away and getting hit with major illnesses. We’ve become aware of drivers’ children who have needs for ongoing surgeries. Maybe health care would cover surgeries, but wouldn’t cover parents travel to and from hospital visits or taking time off of work. These drivers keep our country rolling. We must be there to give back to them and their families when they need us most.
In the realization of these deficits, providing a charity was undoubtedly warranted to provide the great men and women in the trucking industry support and opportunities that they currently do not have.
